Chilean government invests in salmon cluster

The Chilean economic development agency, CORFO, has allocated funds to the salmon cluster in order to channel public and private efforts to strengthen and enlarge the cluster.

The cluster, situated in the Lagos region, was advised by the PUCV (Catholic University of Valparaiso) that they should concentrate more on their core competencies, strengthening the cluster and improving its productivity in order to become a world player in the international market.

This programme not only permits the deepening of relationships between the members of the cluster but moreover those with services and activities connected to the salmon industry. The salmon cluster shall receive 3.800 million pesos from private and public funds and this number is expected to rise in the coming years.

The idea of creating a salmon cluster came about in 2000 by the PUCV, who recognized the need to bring together the actors in the salmon industry which was growing annually at a rate of 27%. The cluster was formed around three pillars: government, university and the private sector. The PUCV acted as coordinator and brought together 244 companies in the region.
