Maine Mirrors Finnish Model for Growth

The Maine Science and Technology Foundation recently published an article detailing the similarities (and more recent differences) between Maine and Finland, and concluding that Maine should follow Finland's model for success. The article details how Maine and Finland share similar economic histories (based on rich natural resources and manufacturing), climates, and attitudes.

The article claims that Maine and Finland were strikingly similar ten years ago, then Finland exploded into the high-tech world and is now ranked second (behind the United States) in the world on the Economic Creativity Index. One key development for Maine will be linking University research and the business community. This could prove to be a stumbling block, as Maine's investment in higher education is lacking according to University of Maine researchers.

The underlying premise behind this article is that similarities in population, regional location, and economic history are strong indicators for a similar future cluster development. If Maine is successful, it could create for the US and possibly others a new way to approach cluster development.
