Swiss Biotech Industry: A Sleeping Giant?

Ernst & Young has ranked the Swiss biotech industry as one of the top in Europe on product development, turnover and market capitalization. This success can largely be attributed to biotech clusters developed in the Basel, Geneva, and Zurich areas. The Zurich MedNet is comprised of more than 400 companies, universities, institutes, foundations, hospitals and labs making it the single largest medical/biotech cluster in continental Europe.

Recently, Zurich MedNet formed an alliance with the University of Minnesota's MBBNet. This alliance represents "the world's first and largest medical/bio cluster/web portal alliance, linking research and information resources for more than 1300 organizations." Using a successful clustering strategy it has observers confident that the Swiss biotech industry is making the right moves and may prove to some of the larger biotech countries (Germany, UK, Sweden) that they are Europe's "Sleeping Giant."
