Clustering for competitiveness and growth in Ghana

A feasibility study - sponsored by SPEED Ghana (GTZ/Danida) carried out by Innogate Inc (Thomas Winther, TCI Commissioner West Africa) in collaboration with The Danida Centre, University of Ghana Business School recommends that innovation and competitiveness is encouraged through active facilitation in the following three emerging clusters in Ghana:

• Garment and textile industry, in the Greater Accra Region
• Wood products, in and around Kumasi
• Medicinal plant extract and essential oils, in and around Ho/Volta Region

SPEED has communicated that the study is a valuable contribution to the development of the private sector in Ghana. Talks have therefore been initiated that could well lead to the initiation of three cluster initiatives.
The specific activities proposed in the three emerging clusters are:

• Training of cluster facilitators/innovation brokers
• Deployment of trained cluster facilitators/innovation brokers in the emerging clusters with the objective to increase the number of linkages and frequency of collaboration among stakeholders
• Development of a platform for exchange of experience, learning and guidance to replication of cluster initiatives in other regions and/or industries in Ghana.
