Michael Porter

Michael Porter addressed 'oneLondon' recently, on how to provide practical solutions for deprived areas in the UK's capital. OneLondon is an organization dedicated to innovation and inclusion. It is formed by members from both private and public sectors of business.

He explained that London must be driven by industry innovation, collaboration, and a healthy mix of competitive clusters. Success and productivity will come from 4 key areas:
  • quality inputs
  • incentives (taxes, real estate)
  • demanding, sophisticated local consumers
  • Clusters

Location and workforce are resources that Porter claims are commonly overlooked. If deprived parts of the city can learn how to identify and utilize their assets and apply them in the four key areas, ultimately they should be able to strengthen their position.
Finally, oneLondon was advised to help redress the balance of high and low tech industries, and depend less on the government for policy guidelines and financial backing.

In September it will be 'Porter on Gothenburg', with Professor Porter delivering the keynote address on the final day of the TCI conference. See conference program
