This paper by Fiorenza Belussi was published in the Cambridge Journal of Economics, 1999.
This paper focuses on the importance of industrial policies in supporting the local production system within the “spontaneous” working of the market. The objective is to propose a conceptual framework for the formulation of public policies that stresses the importance of collective learning. The structure and evolution of the Italian local production systems are then examined in detail. This is then followed by an assessment of the influence of policies in determining the performance of local production systems.
