A word from our Special Advisor Erik von Bahr
-----------------------------------------------------------------
This first TCI Newsletter of the year 2004 highlights only some
of the many activities in competitiveness upgrading and cluster
development that are currently underway around the world. Next
month the Executive Committee will have the possibility to meet
the Board of Advisors in Boston and discuss different topics,
like the overall strategy of TCI and the results of the White
Book.
This year TCI will promote many different conferences at a
regional level. We are especially glad as we could see that our
Annual Conference on Innovative Clusters, held in Gothenburg in
September 2003, inspired our participants from Tanzania to
organize a conference on clusters collaborating with the
University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Makerere University in
Uganda and Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique. This
regional conference/workshop will discuss Innovation Systems and
Innovation Clusters in Eastern Africa. I will participate into
this conference as Special Advisor to the Executive Committee of
the EMEA region and will report the results to you in our next
newsletter!
All the best for the new year!
Erik von Bahr

Korea makes plan for textile boom
-----------------------------------------------------------------
During the seventies textiles were Korea's number one export item
accounting for nearly half of total exports. Since then the
numbers have decreased to only one quarter of what they were some
thirty years ago. For some time Korean textile companies pondered
how they might weave a stronger future for the industry, now it
seems their thoughts have been answered ... by the WTO.

A 'brewing' cluster in Oregon
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Some two decades ago, small to medium sized firms in the micro
brewing business created the Oregon Brewers Guild. Since then the
Western U.S. state has been constructing a micro brewing cluster.
The cluster works effectively to generate information concerning
industry trends and techniques whilst successfully marketing its
products nationally and maintaining high standards amongst all
members.

Patrick Dümmler is writing his PhD thesis about Clusters in
Switzerland at the IRL Institute of the ETH Zurich and published
already several articels about potential clusters in Switzerland,
their management and further development. He is asking if the
cluster concept could also be applied on service industries and
in which way, and interested in evaluation methods for cluster
performance.
