Enright, Petrin, Porter, Rosenfeld, Subira, +++
---------------------------------------------------------------
The line up for Gothenburg, Sweden in September is impressive. We
will have together some of the most innovative thinkers and
practitioners on cluster based economic development. The
conference theme, 'Innovative Clusters - A New Challenge', will
offer fresh insights on best practices in cluster development.
Case studies will be presented for discussion from emerging and
developed economies. See www.competitiveness.org for the
conference programme, and the identity of other leaders who will
be sharing their insights in September.
As has become the custom with the TCI global conferences, a
pre-conference visit to local clusters is available, which will
include film, automotive and telematics clusters. And the popular
half day preparatory course on facilitating clusters will be
repeated.
Over 20 countries were represented at TCI's last global
conference in Cairns, Australia; we are expecting an even wider
participation this year. Registration is now open, with the
registration discount available only to June 30.
With best wishes,
Ifor Ffowcs-Williams - president@competitiveness.org
Multilateral agencies & cluster support
----------------------------------------------------------------
How can participants at the Gothenburg conference benefit from
the recent trend by donor agencies to implement competitiveness
projects around the world? Millions of dollars are now being
awarded to consultants and companies implementing competitiveness
initiatives in developing countries.
Competitiveness will figure prominently in President Bush's
Millennium Challenge Account Initiative where an additional $5
billion dollars will be allocated.

The Maine Science and Technology Foundation recently published an

Maine and Finland, and concluding that Maine should follow Finland's
model for success. The article details how Maine and Finland share
similar economic histories (based on rich natural resources and
manufacturing), climates, and attitudes.

Le Maroc Competif
----------------------------------------------------------------
In 1995, the Le Maroc Competitif was launched in Morocco to develop a
cluster-based approach for economic growth. In cooperation with the
World Bank and an agreement with the European Union, Morocco identified
four potential clusters to drive the economy: textiles and apparel, sea

Swiss Biotech Industry: A Sleeping Giant?
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Ernst & Young has ranked the Swiss biotech industry as one of the top in
Europe on product development, turnover and market capitalization. This
success can largely be attributed to biotech clusters developed in the
Basel, Geneva, and Zurich areas. The Zurich MedNet is comprised of more
than 400 companies, universities, institutes, foundations, hospitals and
labs making it the single largest medical/biotech cluster in continental
Europe.
