Gujarat government continues to foster cluster based economic development

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Gandhinagar, the capital of the western Indian region of Gurajat, is initiating more cluster developments due to the impressive results from other such projects.

The Gurajat government will assist NIFT in their aim of developing more cluster projects within the following years. It is anticipated that the operations of NIFT's Research, Development and Training centre (RDT), which concentrates upon product, technology and skill development, will be central within the cluster projects. The Government's "Critical Infrastructure Balancing Scheme" provided financial backing for the founding of the RDT centre.

The aim of NIFT is to impart design development training for personnel as well as creating prototypes to guide the garment industry. Currently NIFT offers training for garment operators and supervisors as well as a specific programme, with the assistance from the industries commission, for self-employed women.

The cluster initiatives anticipated by NIFT will be developed around supporting craftsmen in economic sustainability, thereby focusing upon design, technology and skill development.
