Congestion and environmental degradation threaten viability of NETA

The EU has been researching ways to alleviate problems within the Northern European Trade Axis (NETA), running through six countries: Ireland, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Poland.

The two main aims of the EU during this research are:
  • to address economic and transportation problems
  • to construct a plan for future development that will preserve and utilize the region?s environment.
One solution focuses on breaking away from traditional North-South development and improving upon East-West growth across Europe. Cluster development plays a major role in determining the nature of this development and where funds will be spent. In order to reduce congestion, effective cluster development could limit far ranging and inefficient industrial redundancy. It will also be important to recognize the potential place for environmental clusters as a key component in the future of the NETA corridor. Some steps have already been taken towards these ends.
