Thai Prime Minister wants better cluster performance
At a recent meeting with the Thai Competitiveness Committee, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra expressed displeasure over the slow development of the industry cluster programme, which was initiated last year to build competitiveness of Thai products, a source from the Government House said.
He said new measures would be outlined that the clusters were are completed by next year.
Four sectors are targeted by the programme:
-
automobiles and parts;
-
textiles, garments and fashion goods;
-
electrical and electronic goods;
-
food.
Participation from the private sector had been limited to date.
"In Thailand, those who join cluster schemes want to take advantage of all the benefits offered by the government and spend nothing on strengthening the cluster," an official said.
To strengthen the programme, the government seeks assistance from schools and international institutes in developing local clusters, as well as roadshows in the provinces to raise cluster awareness.
