European Union Enlargement Conference

Written 10.05.2004 16:56 by    Print    Send article

The European Union celebrated its recent extension during the European Union Enlargement Conference (EIADT) in Paris May the 3rd and 4th.

The conference in Paris featured Valéry Giscard D´Estaing and Jacques Delors.

But the real stars were the 10 new members states.

One interesting emerging theme was the re-establishment of old macroregions, such as a Central European region, a South-Eastern (the Balkan), a Northern (the Baltic Sea Region) etc.

One rationale for this re-establishement would be the historical links that are obvious for the the new "eastern" member states.

Another rationale is a more practical: the new member states are physically far away from Brussels.

These macroregions may lead to new opportunities for competitiveness and cluster development and perhaps even to another philosophy for the EU Constitution.

More information can be found on the EIADT conference website.
