Structural change in Europe

Written 11.05.2004 17:19 by    Print    Send article

Christian Ketels of Harvard Business School in a recently published article named "Structural Change in Europe 3 - Innovative City and Business Regions" discusses the role of clusters in the European Union.

He states that "European companies need strong clusters and business environments at their home locations to compete successfully on world markets".

Clusters, he states, offer a crucial opportunity to take the necessary steps for modernizing economic policies in Europe towards the goal of the Lisbon Summit: making Europe the world's most competitive and dynamic knowledge based economy. Ketels discusses new evidence on clusters in Europe and recent efforts to integrate the cluster perspective into European economic policy thinking.

The article concludes with thoughts on how the current efforts can be made more effective in increasing competitiveness.
