Victoria, Australia's south eastern state has started a cluster for the radio frequency identification (RFID) industry. The launch of the cluster, named VIC RFID Action, was announced by the Victorian ITC Minister, Marsha Thomson earlier this month.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is the method of remotely storing and retrieving data using small objects, such as stickers, that can be attached to a product.

"The potential of RFID technology is enormous, with many industry experts already predicting that it will have as big an impact on the way companies do business as the internet," Thomson said.

According to the minister research found that manufacturers in the US will spend more than US$5 billion on RFID during the next three years.

The cluster will receive $100,000 funding from the government to establish a "collaboration of providers, users and others concerned with the research, development and application of RFID",

Thomson hopes that Victoria will establish itself as a "centre of excellence in RFID".
