Andy Woodsworth

Vice-President, Research (Acting), Life Sciences and Information Technology, National Research Council of Canada

Previously Director General of the NRC Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT), Dr. Woodsworth has been acting Vice-President, Research (Life Sciences and Information Technology) since August 1st, 2004.

Dr. Woodsworth obtained a Ph.D. in Physics from Queen's University and joined NRC in 1975, developing real-time control and data acquisition systems for radio telescopes. He has also published numerous research papers in radio and optical astronomy.

Over the course of his career at NRC, Dr. Woodsworth has made a number of contributions to information technology. He was the first leader of the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre, which is one of only three sites worldwide to host a complete data archive from the Hubble Space Telescope. He was responsible for the development of the first national Internet in Canada, Ca*net. More recently, Dr. Woodsworth was Canadian project manager for the international Gemini telescopes project, as well as Executive Director of C3.ca, the Canadian organization for high-performance computing.
