Auto cluster for Pune

Pune, the second largest city in the state of Maharashtra, India has received a formal government approval to set up an auto cluster, making it the first cluster of its kind in the country.

The estimated cost for setting up the cluster is about 670.000.000 rupees (about 15 million USD).

According to its initiators, the Maharatta Chamber of Commerce and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation the main objective of the cluster development plan is to “improve international competitiveness of the domestic industry". Its goal is to set up industrial clusters with high growth potential.

The promoters have also formed a Special Purpose Vehicle Auto Cluster Development and Research Institute Ltd - in April 2004 and approved Rs 60 crore, with a separate Rs seven crore for equipment.

All the auto component manufacturers are being asked to join hands for promotion and development of the cluster.

The coordinator of the chamber of commerce claimed that setting up the auto cluster would help in organizing small and medium enterprises into one productive unit.
