Clusters in Developing Countries
Indian blacksmiths await clusterBlacksmiths and iron-mongers (locally known as lohars) from Baghraji, near Jabalpur, India, shall become small-scale industrialists if a cluster proposal of the regional government gets clearance from a national level.
The plan is currently being scrutinized by the Centre and the National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The Baghraji area near Jabalpur has approximately 150 small units, run by blacksmiths, that manufacture conventional agriculture implements, door ledges and locks, window panels, and kitchen appliances like knives and tawas, and supply them to nearby town and rural areas. The cluster is likely to be funded under the Integrated Rural Development Plan of Nabard if approved. According to government sources, there is a plan to develop a market centre with premises and a community centre for the blacksmith of these areas. The cluster, if given the go-ahead, shall give employment to 2,000 people directly and about 4,000 people indirectly. Source: Business Standard. Send article |
