Ontario and Chile governments strengthen mining ties

The governments of Ontario and Chile's northern Antofagasta region have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening bilateral mining industry cooperation.

Northern Ontario and the Antofagasta region alike have rich mineral resources that contribute significantly to the regions' economy.

Canadian Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci believes that by sharing knowledge and experiences and promoting trade exchange the two regions shall have an opportunity to discover efficient and more effective approaches to modern mining challenges.

Representatives from Ontario were in Chile in June to promote Ontario mining and to meet with regional government leaders and senior mining company executives. One of the areas of cooperation to be explored will be the strengthening of mining
clusters.

In 2003, the Ontario government created the Ontario Mining Industry Cluster Council to bring together industry and organizations and research institutions to foster a sustainable and rising standard of living for Ontario's mining regions.
