Board of Advisors President Antoni Subirà Appointed To European Commission Expert Group
Antoni Subirà, Chairman of The Competitiveness Institute's Board of Advisors and Catalonia's former minister of industry, have been invited by European Commissioner for Science and Research Janez Potocnik to join a group that will identify priority actions for the EU to boost its investment in research.
"We are very happy that TCI's experts have such an high reputation. Mr Antoni Subirà insight in competitive issues has been invaluable for TCI. We are glad that members of TCI can contribute to the development of society," TCI President Lars Eklund commented.
The expert group is formed in response to a request at the informal European summit for the Commission, to look at ways of encouraging more and better research and innovation in the face of globalization. The former Prime Minister of Finland, Esko Aho, will chair the group. Other members are: Jo Cornu, the former number two at Alcatel; and Professor Luke Georghiou of the Manchester Business School.
"The aim is for them to identify the actions and issues that should be put as a matter of priority to the attention of heads of state and government at their spring summit in March 2006," Commissioner Potocnik said.
The purpose of the expert group is to provide the European Commission with advice and views on a number of issues relating to the reinforcement of EU research and innovation performance.
The group will deliver its report to the Commission by 15 January 2006. The work is part of the follow-up to the Hampton Court informal summit of EU leaders.
