Word from the President
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The culture within a high performance cluster is a
healthy combination of intense competition and strategic
collaboration; co-opetition is the term often used. So too is the
culture between TCI members, and within the annual TCI
conference. Our clusters may well be competing, but through
collaboration we can still share insights that offer win-win
benefits to those who participate in the sharing.

We are now on the countdown to the Gothenburg conference, and the
count of countries that will be represented continues to grow.
Currently 27 countries will be present, providing a wide array of
insights and best practices for participants to return home with.

I have had the opportunity to preview The Cluster Initiative
Green Book that will shortly be made available to all
participants; this introduces a comprehensive Cluster Initiative
Performance Model that draws on data from over 250 cluster
initiatives globally. The Green Book will be forwarded to all
conference registrants prior to the conference opening so that a
common base for discussion is provided.

If you have not registered, I encourage you to check out the full
conference details now. Let's discuss and explore further in
Gothenburg. Safe travels!

With best wishes, Ifor

Ifor Ffowcs-Williams - president@competitiveness.org

TCI's 6th annual conference in Gothenburg. 17th - 19th September
-----------------------------------------------------------------

The goal of this conference is to provide you, and fellow TCI
members from all fields of business, government, and academia
with the latest cluster knowledge. This year we will focus on
methodologies and policies for building innovative clusters and
innovation systems. Prior to the conference, each participant
will be forwarded a copy of Prof. Örjan Sölvell´s Green Book on
the global state of cluster practices and policies. It will be a
source of reference throughout the event.

The format of this year's conference is highly interactive:
roundtable discussions, forums and workshops will offer you
plenty of opportunities to exchange ideas, learn about cluster
practices and build networks. Three roundtable discussions will
highlight the forefront steps and the 15 mini forums will focus
on selected key issues. These events will be complimented by
lectures and further discussions designed to explore the
practical application of current strategies and cluster
initiatives at regional and global levels. Visit the conference
web site for the full programme: http://www.tciconference.org.

The conference will be preceded by three activities: (1) an
academic summit focusing on interaction and exchange in regional
systems and (2) an introductory course on the basics of cluster
development covering methods, tools and real case presentations,
and (3) cluster study visits including film, automotive and
telematics clusters.

Finally, you will have the chance to meet practitioners from over
25 countries, including the new European Union member states.
Amongst the speakers listed in the program you will see and have
a chance to meet the most established name in cluster research:
Michael Porter. Furthermore there will be contributions from
Michael Enright and also Stuart Rosenfeld of the Community College
Research Centre at Columbia University. Find out about these and
other speakers on the conference website.

The conference is fast approaching and so TCI would encourage you
to register immediately.
